Balneotherapy is a photographic book exploring the benefits of sunbathing, sea bathing, and, above all… holidays.
Made up of a series of images begun in 2023, the book questions our relationship with seaside resorts. How can we photograph these tourist destinations as they fill up with weekenders, summer crowds, and vacationers? How can we portray the way we spend our time when we head to the water’s edge to bask in the sun?
The book opens with a young woman tanning on the sand as the beach is just beginning to wake, and closes later beneath the disco ball of a nightclub. Between these two moments unfolds a succession of summer stories, made up of gestures, details, and small rituals. The whole is conceived as a temporal loop, in which each scene seems to call for the next, and in which the day could begin again endlessly:
“I wanted each photograph to flow into the next, as if gently pulling on the thread of a memory and bringing the whole summer with it.”
Balneotherapy is a photographic stroll that immerses the viewer in what is most universal about holidays: surrender, warmth, boredom, and the repetition of simple pleasures.
This photography book is self-published, in a softcover format. The volume contains 132 pages.
